Vallamont, Our Chaper House
Vallamont
Chi Phi, Rho Chapter House
On January 30, 1909, the 30th anniversary of Rho's founding, ground was broken for its Chapter House. The Chapter House was ready for occupancy at the start of the spring semester in 1910. A house warming reception described as the most brilliant event of the social season with over 400 in attendance, was held in June. of the same year.

Originally, the House was called The Rho Manor. The name "Vallamont" first appeared in the Chapter records in 1912 when it was given the name of one of the Founder Fathers' estate in Blairsville, Pennsylvania.

Vallamont has recently undergone several internal renovations (some out of necessity), and exterior improvements to enhance the house's visual appeal. On the outside of the house, the fire escape was power-sanded and repainted black. It is now up to fire codes and in safe condition.

Under the supervision of Shaun Heilman ('04), several brothers recently re-tiled the pong room ceiling over the summer. It has undergone minor repairs over the semester to fix blemishes and is now back to functioning condition. Burgundy curtains were restored in the dining room that makes it easy to cover the windows when necessary. They are cleaned regularly and make the often-used room feel like home.

In the basement, a new water heater was installed to replace the old one that suddenly broke early last month. The oil and flood damage to the floors of the pong room, red room, glow room, and basement hallway has been cleaned and all is back to normal in the basement and the rest of the house (after a few hours without hot water).

The most recent pledge class has improved the interior of the house by spot painting any blemishes in several public areas of the house as well as putting fresh coats of paint on the basement stairwell and the outdoor basketball court. A new door was built in the glow room and a Chi Phi Parking sign was erected by the parking lot.

Despite all the work that has been put into the house there remain several things on the agenda. We have plans to fix up the third floor lounge and brighten all the hall lights. The major upcoming project is a sprinkler system that needs to be installed to meet state fire code regulations. The state of Pennsylvania and the Lafayette administration has dictated that such a system be put into place by 2004. The cost of such renovations is quite considerable but none-the-less unavoidable under present circumstances. Once the project is completed sprinkler heads and smoke detectors will have been installed in every bedroom and common area, ensuring the safety of every present and future brother.
